Well, 2020 is in the past, and 2021 is here and now. The dates have changed, but the world doesn’t seem to caught up. We still have problems, COVID-19 didn’t magically disappear, the weather is, well, Indiana in January, and it just doesn’t seem to most of us that things are changing.
But guess what? That’s okay!
In fact, let’s be thankful that things aren’t changing. Now, that may seem like a ludicrous thought to most rational individuals, but I want to focus instead on the one thing that never changes: the love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When all else seems dark, dismal, and downright scary, we can take refuge in the fact that through everything, Jesus has us in His great hands.
Yes, we live in a world plagued with problems, confusion, and fear, but when we remember the incredible comfort we can take from Jesus, all those problems can melt away, at least for a bit.
Over this last year two of my close friends and I have been reading from a devotional book based on Martin Luther’s sermons and writings, and no matter what, it seems that when I was doing my reading and praying and writing, all the other issues of the day weren’t quite as important. Yes, the problems were still there, the deadlines were still present, and the papers still needed grading, but those will always be there.
All our problems will always be there.
But so will the love of our Lord. So thanks be to Him, and to Him alone, that some things just don’t change, no matter the calendar might say.
God bless you all, and have a God blessed 2021.
