Seize the Day!

Over the weekend I watched the CLHS production of Disney’s musical “Newsies.” If you’re not familiar, the story takes place at the turn of the 19th century and features a group of newspaper boys that are forced to choose between having their wages unfairly cut or going on strike. They strike, and eventually they win.

I sat in my seat at the play and watched a cast of over eighty students with one voice and movement sing, dance, and flip around the stage. I could not help but be impressed, and it got me thinking. How will our students be called on to seize the day? What hardships will they have to face? What lies will they be tested against? What obstacles will stand in their way and try to tear them down?

And yet just like the Newsies found strength in community and were able to seize the day with all of its obstacles and opportunities, so our students do as well. They are bold and brave and growing into some of the most respectable and faithful young men and women I know.

Seize the day!

And the Lutherans for Life group travels to Washington to peacefully and quietly stand for the value of life.

Seize the day!

And our band and choir students go on tour to spread the joyful message of the Gospel through song.

Seize the day!

And my former students are becoming commercial airline pilots, studying engineering, and all the while staying plugged in with a good church community.

Seize the day!

And our student athletes gather weekly at 7:30 a.m. to participate in voluntary devotions.

Seize the day!

And our Cadet TV channel is watched by individuals across the globe.

Now Concordia is not a perfect place by any means, but it is a fantastic community to get to be a part of. Here we get to challenge our students to seize the day, to step up and step out, to be leaders in their world and faithful followers of Christ in whatever they do. Are all of our students Christians? By no means, but this is a blessing too! It is the individuals of differing perspectives that can best challenge us to listen and love. Let us seize this opportunity as well to learn how to live the Gospel not just speak it. Let us embrace the humility that comes when we fall short of doing so, and so be reminded of the love of Christ on which we all so desperately depend.

And what about you? Will you seize the day with us?

Seize the day!

Our students need your prayers. They face many trials and tribulations.

Seize the day!

Because of your generous donations to our SGO scholarships many students get to attend Concordia who could not otherwise afford it.

Seize the day!

Our building campaign is underway, but we still have a ways to go. Could you help this place continue to grow and thrive?

In Ephesians 5:16 the Scripture says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” As I look at the amazing talents and qualities God has given to our students, I am encouraged, but I also know that the road ahead of them will be difficult. I pray we equip them thoroughly to seize the day without fear but always in the fear of the Lord. I pray that you will seize the day with us and continue to be a part of this community so that our students may be well equipped to go out and shine brightly the love of God in all they do.
