As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
1 Peter 4:10
As the advisor of our school’s National Honor Society (NHS), I have the privilege of watching students grow through leadership, character, and service. While NHS membership is a prestigious honor, the most rewarding aspect is the impact that students make in our community through service projects. Engaging in service fosters empathy, responsibility and allows students to witness the challenges faced by others and develop a deeper appreciation for the power of kindness.
Most recently, members of our NHS group volunteered at Cancer Services of NE Indiana. We learned about the many services that this organization provides and just how many lives they touch each year. Students shared how their own families had been affected by cancer and what a blessing Cancer Services is to our community. We spent the majority of our time there creating the cancer ribbons that are given to thousands of people each year.
I encourage all students to seek out service opportunities, whether through NHS or other organizations. My prayer is that the act of blessing others with our time and talents encourages our students to learn the importance of community and compassion and become committed to lifelong service.
