Congratulations to CLHS freshman, Andy Deng, (and partner Hailey Sundstrom), who won the Juvenile Pair Champions at the 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships a week ago! Andy also placed 9th in the Intermediate Men's Single's division.
It was just last spring that I sat down with Andy’s mom to see if CLHS could accommodate Andy’s vigorous training schedule. She was looking for an alternative to online schooling and another dance school in town that offered limited academic classes.
Andy is a strong student who wanted to be challenged in the classroom and desired the true “high school” experience.
Andy and his coach explained that the skaters can only get “ice time” in the afternoon before hockey begins at 5:00 p.m. With our block schedule we have been able to tailor a schedule that allows Andy to attend classes in the morning and train in the afternoon.
Some online classes will be required in order to obtain the number of credits needed for graduation. Andy has even been invited to interview for the CLHS Honors Academy! Hopefully, this is just the beginning, and CLHS can help other students that have special training schedules follow their dreams. Congratulations, Andy, we are so proud of you!
If you have a student that is pursuing specialized training like Andy and you are interested in giving them a high school experience with the aid of a flexible schedule, please contact me at [email protected] or (260) 483-1102, ext. 298.
