JROTC Activities

Concordia’s leadership and development program is more than just classroom academics. The JROTC program offers numerous extracurricular activities; most are organized and conducted by the cadets. Cadets are able to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom.

JROTC is truly the Battalion members’ home away from home. For those cadets choosing to participate in the program’s staff run extracurricular activities, competition drill teams practice either before or after school. Weekends are filled with drill and rifle competitions, field trips, campouts, adventure team training, color guard performances, and various Cadet Battalion Clubs, as well as numerous community and service learning projects. Those cadets who qualify will have the privilege of attending a week of summer camp in June.

Teams

Color Guard: Concordia’s Color Guard is considered the finest in Fort Wayne. The JROTC color guard is in high demand year round to perform throughout the community and has performed at such events as the opening of the new library, the swearing-in of the Fort Wayne City Officials, most of the city’s Naturalization Ceremonies for new U.S. citizens, as well Concordia’s home games. Their participation in these high profile events emphasizes the importance of Concordia Lutheran High School and the JROTC program in the community. These highly trained, dedicated cadets participate in over 60 community and school events annually.

Drills Teams: Work with the finest teams at Concordia and compete at the national level – armed and unarmed divisions. Students compete throughout the year and demonstrate their skills at our biggest events such as the Clendenen Drill Meet and our annual Tournament. We offer IDR and Co-Ed drill teams.

Rifle Team: The Rifle Team provides competitive sports marksmanship opportunities for Cadets who wish to develop a higher level of proficiency in marksmanship with small-bore and air rifles. Students practice and compete in the school's onsite Rifle Range. The cadets have won 15 straight state championships. Individual cadets have qualified for the Junior Olympics and earned scholarships for collegiate marksmanship teams. Students on the varsity rifle team may earn a school letter.

Snap Squad: One of the finest around, the goal is to execute rifle twirling and marching movements with precision and perfection. The Mascot Team also has the honor of kicking off the basketball games with a shot (surprise!).

Raiders: Our Raiders team tests you physically with rope courses, climbing, rappelling and more! Students compete with area schools, even in at the state level. It's known as the athletic team for JROTC.

VEX Robotics: Our VEX Robotics teams builds and competes with their creations on the world stage! We are two-time VEX JROTC Robotics Champions and hope to continue our run. Students build and test their robots on our own competition floor, and are required to program the robots for certain tasks.

Crew Team: The CLHS Crew is a rowing team that uses Skulls and Sweeps similar to those used in Olympic rowing competition and made famous in the U.S. by schools such as Harvard, Dartmouth, and Yale.

Social Events

The cadets enjoy the annual Dining-In in the fall and the Officers’ Ball in the spring. The JROTC Officers’ Ball is an annual Cadet Battalion dinner and dance. While the music has changed over the more than 70 year tradition of the Officers’ Ball, the fun, excitement and glamour of this event for these cadets and their dates have not.

Service

The Cadet Battalion’s constant community participation and extensive “Service Learning Projects” makes them one of Concordia’s most visible assets and important “Bridge to the Community.” Service is part of leadership and citizenship. The cadets provide 2,000 service hours annually to the school and community, including annually at the Johnny Appleseed Festival. JROTC knows the best way to learn citizenship is by the promotion of patriotism and community service. The program is one of Concordia’s most active. This service has made a significant contribution to the community and an even better effect on our cadets. They take great pride in knowing that they have each made a difference in the world.
