Concordia Lutheran High School is welcoming its newest class of Honors Academy students this fall. These new freshmen are: Aurora Sommermeyer, Andrew Bostwick, Harper Twomey, Timmy Blackmer, Sarah Snyder, Evan Gerig, Emma Stir, Nathaniel Kemme Nash, and Chyim Van Meter.

For my Nutrition and Wellness classes, we don’t begin cooking until students learn kitchen safety and sanitation. Everyone needs to learn to use a fire extinguisher and to mop up spills. I teach students to wash dishes, which sounds silly, but it is not uncommon for students to look around for a dishwasher and are lost when all they have are a sink, some Palmolive, and a dish rag. Despite my demonstration, I have to reteach the dishwashing lesson when I find dirty dishes in the cabinet.

I’m not crying anymore, but I have to admit I had a few emotional moments earlier today. I wasn’t alone. As I’m writing, I am still a couple of hours from home after taking my youngest sons to start their college experience in Nashville, Tennessee. As we said our final goodbyes to the boys I did a great job of holding back the floodgates — until my husband started choking up. My oldest son was next. Then, it was all over for me, too!

I think that all of us get busy with registration, contracts, forms, Back-to-School Nights, signing syllabuses, supply shopping, and then when it’s done we wonder, now what?

Concordia Lutheran High School will induct four new members and one team into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Aug. 20 during a special halftime presentation. They will then be honored at a reception on Aug. 21.
