When I graduated from Concordia Lutheran High School back in 1986, I left for college knowing I wanted to either go into business or to become a teacher. So, two of my first college classes consisted of Intro to Business and Intro to Teaching. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was not destined for the business world, but instead was called to be a teacher.

For as long as I can remember, there were four classes that were required in school in America: English, science, math, and social studies. Taking at least one of each type of these classes per year means the State of Indiana thinks you are educated enough to graduate high school. There are other requirements as well: art, physical education, foreign language, etc. The state believes these classes produce a well-rounded student. I believe they are missing a crucial component in the 21st century: a computer science class.

Serving in the military must be in my family’s bloodline. On my mother’s side of the family going back several generations, the Hagerty family was originally from Northern Ireland and served in the Irish Army. Irish legend has it that the Hagerty family were a fighting people. They fought in several skirmishes and sieges in Ireland. After they migrated from Ireland during the Irish Potato Famine, my family continued their military service in the United States.

Concordia Lutheran High School art students have been recognized in the Scholastics Art & Writing regional competition. All of the works are display at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art until April.

The following students have been named to the Honor Roll and Honorable Mention list for Fall 2017.

Congratulations to our 13 visual art students who were awarded Gold or Silver awards in the Scholastics Art Competition. The student's artwork in on display at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art through April 8. I encourage you to see their work displayed in the gallery. Concordia Lutheran High School juniors Adam Schweyer and Joshua Vandre have been selected to participate in the 57th annual Indiana All-State High School Band Festival sponsored by the Indiana Bandmasters Association (IBA).

In support of the high school’s theme for the year, “United in Service… with Christ at the Center,” students, teachers and staff are creating pottery bowls as a fundraiser for the St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen.

Concordia Lutheran High School will induct six new members and one team into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 17 during a special reception. They also will be honored during the Friday night basketball game on Feb. 16.

I pray all are having a wonderful start to 2018. A special thank you to all who supported the boy's soccer team this past 2017 season. The run to the State Championship game was a milestone for the program that we hope to repeat.
